Abstract

1393774 Corrugating textile fibre webs PIEDMONT MACHINE SHOP Inc 2 Aug 1972 [3 Aug 1971] 36191/72 Heading D1S For improving the resistance to unwinding of a wound textile fibre web W, the web W is longitudinally corrugated by passage between spaced interleaved rotating disc members 35, 36, then immediately, the longitudinal corrugations are compacted by passage between calender rolls 11, 12 to create density variations across the width of the web, and the compacted web is wound. In a textile picker 10, the web W is corrugated by discs 35, 36 fixed to rotating shafts 20, 21 and mounted so that the discs 35 are interleaved with the discs 36 and that each disc rotates without coming into contact with any other disc or with the other of the shafts 20, 21. As shown, the discs 35 have a greater diameter than the discs 36 so that, if the shafts 20, 21 are driven at the same, the peripheral speed of the discs 35 is higher than that of the discs 36 to longitudinally draft portions of the web. To facilitate gripping the web, the edges of the discs 35, 36 may be serrated. The corrugated web passes through a stack of calender rolls 11, 12, 13, 14 and is wound on a lap pin 19, support rolls 17, 18 being provided. Edge guide members 38, 39 are located between the discs 35, 36 and the rolls 11, 12 to prevent transverse expansion of the web W.
