Abstract
1393538 Inductors HEYES & CO Ltd 9 Nov 1972 [10 Nov 1971] 52135/71 Heading HIT An electrical inductor, for use with discharge lamps and the like, is fitted around the neck thereof as ballast, and comprises windings 12 around generally trapezoidal lamination stacks 11 which are arranged symmetrically around an aperture through which the lamp is inserted, at least two neighbouring stacks being spaced apart, as at 16 where an airgap is produced by an insulating spacer. The lamination stacks comprise elements of a soft magnetic material, e.g. low-silicon magnetic steel and are rendered integral by inter-element resin insulation which is bonded by curing. A heat shrink sleeve (14, Fig. 2, not shown) may surround the lamination and separate it from the winding 12 which may be self supporting. The assembly is enclosed in a housing 17 and a heat conductive resin, e.g. epoxy, polyester, is poured into the housing and cured, and a terminal block is included as at 19, and windings 12 each form a sub-unit of the complete inductance; taps may also be provided on one of the windings. The housing may be permanent or removed after assembly, acting merely as a mould.
