A transformer or inductor (Fig. 3) has one or more windings 2, 3 each arranged either as a layer winding 2 shaped to correspond to the (curved) shape of the magnetic field which would be produced by the winding in its own vicinity in air or as a disc-type winding shaped to intercept orthogonally the magnetic field it would produce in air as described in Specification 1.085,708 or both (as 3). In either case the windings surround a magnetic core member 1 shaped to correspond to the shape of the magnetic field which the windings would produce in air in the space to be occupied by the core surface. The disc coils forming a L.T. winding may be connected in parallel. The curved layer windings 7 (Fig. 4) are wound on curved formers 8 and held by insulating supports 10. The insulating supports 10 are held in place, against the forces produced by currents in the winding by strut members supported on the outer frame 17. Disc-type windings 6 of the required shape may be used as strut members. A two-part H.T. winding of normal layer or disc type with the parts connected in parallel at their adjacent ends may be used (Fig. 7, not shown). The windings may be of superconductive type as described in Specification 1,084.529. The curve shape of the core limb may be obtained approximately by adding packets of annular laminations at the core and tapering the adjacent portions of the various return members (Fig. 5, not shown).
