Abstract
139,277. Reid, C. H. Feb. 12, 1919. Armatures, cooling; casings; mounting rotors. -The rotor 12, Fig. 1, of an induction or other motor for operating a pump &c. is enclosed in a fluid-tight chamber inside the stator 2 and constituted by a sheath 3 preferably of insulating- material fitting over projections on end plates 5, 6: the rotor shaft 11 has an axial bore 10<1> with lateral openings 20 through which fluid is circulated by the action of the rotor. The end plates have cylindrical portions 7 containing bearings 9 and screwed end-plugs 23; the ends of the bore 10<1> are closed by caps 21, against which press adjustable thrust-absorbing screws 22. The end member 6 has a volute 13 with a discharge 14, the fluid to be pumped being admitted through an inlet 15. The pump runner 16 is bolted to the rotor 12, some fluid being allowed to enter the rotor chamber at the joint between the runner 16 and the volute 13. In a modified construction, Fig. 4, the rotor 12 and pump runner 16 are overhung. The rotor is supported on its shaft 31 by webs or spiders 29<1>, which are cut away to form a conical recees 30. The shaft 31 has an axial bore 38 and lateral opening 39. The pump runner is secured to a plate 40 on the rotor, openings 47 being provided for the passage of fluid to the shaft 31 from the inlet 46.
