Abstract

1392356 Image intensifier tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 April 1972 [16 April 1971] 17103/72 Heading H1D In an image intensifier tube of the electrostatic inverter type (Fig. 1, not shown) including a photocathode and a luminescent screen, the screen includes a cathode-luminescent layer covered, on the side facing the photocathode, by an electrically conductive and light impervious layer the nature and thickness of which are such that, a 50% reduction of the accelerating voltage, to a value not less than 8 kv., from the nominal operating value, produces a 90% reduction of image luminance, whereby an increased range of image intensity over that range of accelerating potentials for which image definition remains satisfactory. The layer may be of aluminium 10,000 angstroms thick; or of another metal-eg. titanium, silver, lead, or gold-which may be sandwiched between the fluorescent layer and an aluminium layer; or of the luminescent material, e.g. zinc cadmium sulphide, but devoid of activator, sandwiched between the activated luminescent layer and an aluminium layer. The intensifier tube is particularly intended for use in X-ray applications.
