Abstract

1390270 Coating composition MONSANTO Ltd 12 Oct 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 51048/72 Heading C4A A paint comprises a finely-divided metal or pigment and a liquid medium which is a dispersion of colloidal silica particles of specific surface area 60-400 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. in a colloidal solution of silica obtained by the acid catalysed hydrolysis in a water-imiscible solvent of an alkyl silicate, the liquid medium having (i) a total silica content of 10-35 wt. per cent of which the colloidal silica of specific surface area 60- 400 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. constitutes 15-45 wt. per cent, (ii) a water-imiscible solvent content of 65-90 wt. per cent, (iii) an acidity of 0À003-0À05 N, and (iv) a water content of 0 to less than 5 wt. per cent. The finely-divided metal may be Zn, Al or Cu. Suitable pigments are TiO 2 , BaSO 4 , ZnO, iron oxides, chrome yellow, cobalt blue and carbon black. The liquid medium is preferably prepared by acidifying a silica aquasol with HCl or H 2 SO 4 , mixing with the solvent (e.g. an alcohol or glycol), and then adding the alkyl silicate to the acidic organo-aqueous silica sol.
