1390115 Benzofuran derivatives SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSOHAPPIJ BV 9 Aug 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 37174/72 Heading C2C Novel compounds have the Formula I wherein R 1 represents a carboxy group or a salt, ester, or an optionally mono- or di-N- alkyl substituted amide thereof; R 2 represents an alkyl group; and R 3 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyloxy group; with the proviso that when R 3 represents a hydrogen atom R 1 does not represent a carboxy group. Examples prepare (1) 2-methylbenzo(b)furan 3-carboxylic acid by the action of Br 2 /NaOH on the corresponding 3-acetyl derivative, (2) the methyl and ethyl esters of this acid using SOCl 2 and methanol or ethanol respectively on the latter, (3) the amide, N-methylamide and N,N- dimethylamide of the same acid by C.NH 3 , CH 3 NH 2 or (CH 3 ) 2 NH on the corresponding acid chloride, and (4) the tetramethylammonium salt of said acid by neutralization of the latter with the corresponding quaternary ammonium hydroxide. Also prepared from ethyl 5-hydroxy-2- methylbenzo(b)furan - 3 - carboxylate are the corresponding 5 - acetoxy, 5 - benzoyloxy, 5 - (N - methylcarbamoyloxy) and 5 - (N - 3,4- dichlorophenylcarbamoyloxy) derivatives using respectively acetic anhydride, benzoyl chloride, methyl isocyanate, and 3,4-dichlorophenylisocyanate. The compounds of Formula I, including those wherein R 3 is hydrogen and R 1 is carboxy, possess plant growth regulant properties.
