Abstract
1389738 Coiling helices on rotating mandrel STELMO Ltd P R LUCKETT J S MOBBS and A J HARRIS 7 May 1973 [19 May 1972] 23600/72 Heading B3E [Also in Divisions F2 and B5] In a method of making reinforced concrete pipes, a layer of green concrete is deposited on a mandrel and receives helical windings of a flexible binding member and a flexible reinforcing member under tension before the concrete sets. Apparatus for making the pipes includes a mounting 10, 25 for a rotatable mandrel 27 surrounded by a hopper 29 which is movable along the mandrel axis, means 31, 32 for supplying a flexible binding member for winding about concrete deposited through the hopper on to the mandrel and means 38, 40, 48 for supplying a flexible reinforcing member 35 under tension for winding about the concrete before it sets. As shown, a motor 43 drives a set of winding pulleys 40 and the mandrel 27 through sprockets 46, 41, 42, 26 so that the peripheral speed of the pulleys 40 is less than that of the mandrel 27. The reinforcing member 35 is a high tension steel wire which is passed around pulleys 49, 51, 52 on a hydraulic ram 48 mounted on a platform 13. Two sets of such winding arrangement may be provided. The platform 13, which also mounts the hopper 29 and vibrators 30 can be raised or lowered along the mandrel on four chains 15 anchored to an hydraulic ram 19. The binding member, which may be polypropylene string or a woven, textile or metallic tape, is taken from a bobbin 31 and through a tensioner 32. The platform 13 is initially at its lowermost position and the binding and reinforcing members are attached to an end plate (60) (Fig. 3, not shown) of the mandrel which also mounts longitudinal wire reinforcements. Concrete is poured into the hopper 29 which is vibrated and the platform 13 is raised. A further layer of concrete may be deposited on the wound layers. A metal spigot (70), (Fig. 2, not shown), may be bound in the concrete at one end of the mandrel for connecting successive pipe lengths together.
