Abstract
1389675 Super-conductor cables and electromagnets BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 2 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 9781/72 Headings H1A and A4D Super-conductor cable comprises an inner conductor 2 of super-conductor material having an internal cooling duct, a tape 8 of inorganic insulating material e.g. glass fibre, asbestos, mica or metal oxide wound about the conductor and a metal tape wound over the insulating layer on folded therearound with a longitudinal seam, adjacent edges of the tape being soldered or welded to form an enclosing sheath. The sheath may be of copper, copper alloy or aluminium and be 0À05 to 0À5 mm. thick. The cable may be made by pulling conductor 2 from drum 1, past a tensioner 3, helically winding the tape 8 about the conductor and helically winding a continuous or woven metal tape 9 about the insulation. The tape edges are then soldered or welded at station 10. The conductor may be used for making coils when adjacent turns may be soldered or welded to each other. The conductor can withstand ionizing radiation greater than 10<SP>10</SP> rad.
