Abstract

1389631 Electron beam apparatus ENERGY SCIENCES Inc 30 Jan 1973 [24 March 1972] 4594/73 Heading H1D An electron beam apparatus for producing an elongated beam comprises a cathode 1, a control grid 7, a further grid 13 forming part of an electrostatic screen 11 and a housing 15 containing the vacuum and also acting as anode with an electron pervious window 17 from which the beam emerges. The housing also contains a transformer having primary P and secondary S the latter being connected between cathode 1 and grid 13 to deliver high voltage pulses when pulses are applied to the primary from external circuitry PD. Synchronous pulses are also applied to grid 7. The pulses are of such short duration and of steep rise and fall times that breakdown of the vacuum does not occur. The transformer is made resonant at, say, 80 kHz and the first negative half-cycle of the oscillations is used for the pulse.
