Abstract
1388568 Sewing machine H C ANDERSEN 17 March 1972 [18 March 1971] 12739/72 Heading D1G The open toe of a stocking is sewn closed by apparatus comprising jaws 1, 2 defining a curved guide slot 3 into which is introduced the toe selvedges 31, 32, the jaws being movable from a first position (shown dotted) wherein the selvedges are introduced to a second position (full line) when the stocking toe is gripped between a presser foot 5 and an abutment surface 8, before the jaws 1, 2 are withdrawn and opened (Figs. 5 and 6 not shown) and then return to the first position, and the toe closed by sewing means not shown. The presser foot and surface 5, 8 and the sewing means are those described in Specification 1201829. The upper jaw 1 is pivoted (at 9, Fig. 2 not shown) to the lower jaw which is itself pivoted (15) to a carriage (14) slidable on bars (17) mounted on a rotatable turret (19). The movements of the jaws are effected by pneumatic rams.
