Abstract

1387953 Jointing by stamping; making electrical connections AMP Inc 1 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 20617/73 Headings B3A and B3Q Apparatus for crimping electrical terminals 10, Fig. 7, to leads 12 includes funnel portions 90, Fig. 2, with radial legs 87 movable in synchronism with crimping jaws 96 to define a funnel, Fig. 7, for guiding and locating a lead in a terminal, and a collar 64 carrying resilient cams 66, Fig. 2a, for operating the legs 87. Each cam has a surface 71 for urging the legs 87 together upon rotation of the collar 64 in one direction, and a second surface 120 for retaining the legs together upon rotation of the collar 64 in the opposite direction during crimping. The entry end of surface 120 is at the exit end of surface 71 and a step at the exit end of surface 120 permits the legs 87 to spring back into engagement with the entry end of surface 71 to open the portions 90. As shown, Fig. 1, the guide funnel and crimping jaws are mounted in a stationary head 46 within a carrying case 28 to which terminals are fed from a reel 31. The terminals 10 are held in pockets 22, Fig. 7, between the layers of a plastics strip 16 which is advanced by a belt (16), Fig. 4 (not shown), having teeth (117) engaging slots 18 in the strip 16. A disc 80, Fig. 2, has guides slots 82 in one side for the legs 87 and slots 92 in the opposite side in which the crimping jaws 96 are movable inwardly by cams 75 and outwardly by cams 76 having slots engaged by pins on the jaws. The jaws 96 have adjustable control sections 99. The cams 66 and cam carriers 67 for the legs 87 are mounted in recesses 65 in one side of the collar, cam 75, 76 for the crimping jaws being mounted in recesses 74 in the opposite side of the collar. A pin 77 on the collar 64 is connected to a lever (110, Fig. 4) which is rocked by an electric motor and flywheel to oscillate the collar. Springs 86 bias the legs 87 outwardly, the disc 80 being received within the collar 64 and the collar within an outer ring. A plastics cover 53 has a lateral slot 56 through which a terminal is removed, having been crimped to a wire in the central opening 55. The ends 38, Fig. 7, of the leads 12 are stripped of insulation in a known stripper 36 which is driven by the power means of the crimping head.
