Abstract

1387917 Silver halide emulsions FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 18 May 1972 [18 May 1971] 23537/72 Heading G2C A gelatino-silver halide photographic emulsion contains (1) at least one monomethine or trimethine cyanine sensitizing dye capable of forming a J-aggregate and having a cathodic polarographic half wave potential of from -0À9 to -1À8 volt and an anodic polarographic half wave potential lower than 1À3 volt, and (2) an organic compound capable of bridging gelatine molecules to effect hardening of the gelatine while releasing an organic or inorganic acid. The cyanine dye is preferably of general Formula (I). in which Y 1 and Y 2 each represent O, S, Se, or -CH = CH-, Z 1 and Z 2 each complete an optionally substituted benzene or naphthalene nucleus, n is 0 or 1, X 1 <SP>#</SP> represents an anion, p is 0 or 1, R 1 and R 2 each represent alkyl (1-6C) allyl or substituted alkyl particularly sulphoalkyl, and A is H, lower alkyl (1-3C) or substituted alkyl or of general Formula II. in which Y 3 is O, S, Se, = N-R6 or = C#<SP>R7</SP> R8 R 7 and R 8 each represent CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 each represent alkyl (1-6C) allyl or substituted alkyl, R 3 and R 4 preferably being sulphoalkyl, Z 3 and Z 4 each complete an optionally substituted benzene or naphthalene nucleus X 2 # is an anion and q is 0 or 1. The organic compound which hardens the gelatine is preferably selected from 2, 3-dihalogenomalealdehydic acids, 2, 4-dichloro-S-triazines, chloropyrimidines, polymers containing a chlorotriazine ring as a side chain, dichlorophosphoamides, methyl halides, phosphonitrite chlorides and 2-phenoxy- 3-halogeno-marealdehydic acids which compounds release hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid, or phenols.
