Abstract
1387275 Biological treatment apparatus WORTHINGTON BIOCHEMICAL CORP 21 March 1973 [21 July 1972] 13592/73 Heading B1C In an apparatus 1 for treating a solution, e.g. milk or starch, with a biological reactant e.g. lactase or glucoamylase, an elongate vessel 3 with inlet and outlet ports 5 and 7 supports a rotatable axle 9 on which is mounted a plurality of disc-like supporting means 11 over which the reactant is distributed and affixed. A plurality of stationary baffles 13 intercalates with the supporting means 11 and is mounted on the inner wall of the vessel 3. The supporting means 11 may each comprise a central foraminous screen 15 (see Fig. 3) e.g. of plastics, such as fibre glass or nylon, or metal, with a foraminous screen 17, e.g. of wire, on either side. Screen 15 supports a carrier for the reactant consisting of a semipermeable membrane insoluble in the solution e.g. cellulose derivatives, proteins such as collagen, or vinyl polymers. The reactant may be entrapped in the carrier by dispersing or dissolving it in a solution of the membraneforming polymer then evaporating the solvent. Suitable solvents are volatile ethers, ketones or chlorinated hydrocarbons. The solution to be treated in the apparatus may be pumped through the vessel and an impeller may be mounted on the axle.
