Abstract

1386601 Automatic control of electrostatic charge UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 11189/71 Heading G3R Electrostatic charge or field in an atmosphere is detected, and a quantity of charge of opposite sign is injected in order to reduce charge buildup in the atmosphere. As shown, the storage tank 11 of an oil tanker is fitted with high pressure water nozzles 12 for cleaning the tank. Interaction between the water jets and the tank walls produces a mist of charged water droplets. Electrostatic field meters 15, 16 are mounted close to the tank walls to monitor charge buildup, and their outputs are connected to a comparator and control circuit 17. The atmosphere in the tank is continuously mixed, either by the action of the water jets or by fans, so that the readings of meters 15, 16 are representative of the atmosphere as a whole. If an excessive difference between the two readings is detected by the circuit 17, an alarm 18 is actuated, and the water jets may be stopped. The circuit 17 also supplies a signal to control a device 19 which supplies airborne charged particles to the tank 11. The device may include a spiked electrode producing corona discharge through which air is drawn, Fig. 2 (not shown).
