Abstract
138,655. Linden, L. July 19, 1918. Tanks and containers.-In apparatus for separating lighter matters, such as oil or grease, and heavier matters from liquid, the liquid is caused to flow horizontally at a constant speed along an unobstructed passage above which is a chamber into which the grease &c. rise, and below which is a series of pockets in which the heavier matters settle. Specification 1266/16 is referred to. In the form shown, a number of vertical baffles 10 are arranged above and below the horizontal passage x. The pockets 25 for heavier materials communicate by openings controlled by valves 23 with a discharge passage 26. The inlet 5 and outlet 3 are arranged at such a height as to keep the oil &c. in the chamber 2 at a suitable level to be drawn off by the pipe 11. If the grease &c. is too thick to flow off easily it can be forced out by liquid pressure, the ordinary inlet and outlet 5 and 3 being closed. The separated grease &c. may be cut off from the rest of the apparatus by valves 20, 21 and treated with steam, hot air &c. Valves may also be provided for isolating the pockets 25. Baffles and agitating arrangements for breaking up lumps and pipes for heating and for introducing treating liquids may also be provided in suitable parts of the apparatus. The apparatus is stated to be applicable for treating water or sewage.
