Abstract

1385915 Settling tanks; mixing apparatus E T ARMSTRONG 21 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 59380/71 Headings B1C and B1D [Also in Division C1] A plant for treating waste liquid comprises (1) a primary settling tank, (2) a digester for receiving sludge from (1), (3) a primary bioprocessing tank, (4) means for injecting oxygencontaining gas under high momentum exchange conditions (i.e. in which the Reynolds No. is at least 3000) into a line for passing a portion of supernatant liquid from (1) to (3), (5) means for recirculating a portion of effluent from (3) to (1), (6) a secondary bioprocessing tank for receiving effluent from (3), (7) a secondary settling tank for receiving effluent from (6), and (8) means for disinfecting effluent from (7). Oxygen-containing gas may be passed into effluent passing from (3) to (1). Effluent from (3) may be injected with oxygen-containing gas and recirculated to (3). Effluent may be passed from (7) to (3). Fig. 3 shows a suitable primary or secondary settling tank to which effluent is fed via column 90 and rotating diffuser 60 and also by spiral feed pipes 82, 84, and from which supernatant liquid is discharged via a weir at the periphery of the tank and via collectors 62, 64. Screen 74 removes e.g. oil and grease. The tank contains sludge rake 60b. Sludge is discharged through outlet 95. The oxygen and organic content of the tank is sensed by sensors e.g. 72, 72a. In another embodiment effluent is discharged into the bottom of the settling tank. A suitable disinfector (Fig. 5) comprises a number of pipes joined by T-couplings 208, through which a turbulent flow of liquid is passed from 201 to 216 and mixed with ozone introduced at couplings 208. A coupling 208 (Fig. 6) comprises an apertured plate 208a, an ozone-containing oxygen injector 212 and a rod 210 which is vibrated by oscillator 211. Sensors 214 sense the ozone concentration and B.O.D. reduction in the liquid and control the power supply to ozone generator 202. Oxygen may be removed from points such as 218 and 219.
