Abstract

1384895 Aerosol fabric conditioner COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 21 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3027/72 Heading C4X [Also in Division D1] An aerosol fabric conditioning composition comprises a foaming agent, a fabric conditioner, a normally gaseous propellant and water, in emulsion form, which emulsion upon discharge forms a stable foam (i.e. one which does not lose its shape for at least 5 minutes after discharge and does not weigh less than 10% below the total weight of the discharged material) and which is spreadable over the surfaces of fabric during tumbling of the fabric to condition the fabric. The conditioner is a fabric-softening and/or antistatic agent. The foaming agent may be an anionic or non-ionic surface active agent and may account for 0À5 to 15% of the composition. Suitable foaming agents, of which many are listed, include lower alkanolamine soaps of higher fatty acids, water-soluble higher fatty alcohol sulphates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, polyoxy-lower alkylene higher alkyl ethers and higher alkyl di-lower alkyl amine oxides. The conditioner, which may be the same or a different substance from the foaming agent, may be an amphoteric or cationic surface active agent present in an amount of 0À5 to 15% of the composition if distinct from and 1 to 30% of the composition if the same as, the foaming agent. Specified conditioners include complex fatty amido compounds and quaternary ammonium halides. The propellant may be a fluorocarbon, chlorofluorocarbon or a mixture of such substances, nitrogen, nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide and may be present in an amount of 10 to 79% of the composition. The balance is water, preferably deionized. Thickeners, e.g. synthetic resins, organic gums or cellulose derivatives, may be added to slow the rate of discharge of the composition. Thinning agents such a polyhydric alcohols may be added to prevent gelation of the composition foam stabilizers, e.g. cetyl alcohol may be included, particularly when the foaming agent is non-ionic. Fluorescent brighteners of the amino stilbene type may be added. The composition is preferably agitated before use.
