Abstract

1384560 Thermal regenerators SOC GENERALE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (ALSTHOM) 1 Nov 1972 [2 Nov 1971] 50435/72 Heading F4K A thermal regenerator consists of an endless chain 1 of elements each serving both as a filter and for heat transfer, each said element comprising a stack of metal mesh sheets moving either continuously or intermittently through a compartment 4 conveying hot gas (e.g. boiler flue gas), and through a compartment 5 conveying a gas such as air to be heated, the chain elements passing also through an intermediate compartment 6 in which is installed means for cleaning the elements of dust &c. deposited thereon from the hot gas. The cleaning arrangements may comprise brushes 32 and air jets 31; and may include intermittent air or steam blasts from a nozzle 34, and/or a jet of gas tapped either from the hot gas stream (e.g. at 9, Fig. 1), or from the air stream (e.g. at 33, Fig. 6). Sealing chambers between the compartments 4 and 5 are indicated at 25. Sulphuric acid deposits caused by condensation from the flue gases are said to arise mainly at point 43 and their corrosive effect may be counteracted by injecting a neutralizing substance (unspecified), to form a solid deposit which dries and is subsequently removed by the cleaning means in compartment 6. The heat transfer elements can be inspected and if necessary replaced, as the chain passes through a compartment 40. The metal mesh sheets of each chain element may comprise outer layers 37, Fig. 8, of coarse mesh, adjacent to which are fine-mesh layers 38, the innermost layers 39 being of a medium mesh.
