In a rotary cylinder machine, the cylinder 8, draw-off 10 and take-down 11, and ring 17 supporting the warp yarn beams 20 are driven from a motor 3 by a shaft 5. The yarns are guided by combs 23, 24 and guides 79. A stationary ring 14 supports upper and lower creels 15, 16 for ground yarn bobbins 35 and weft bobbins 42 respectively. Bobbins 101 of plating yarn 97 are carried by the lower creel. The ground and weft yarns are supplied by similar guides (90 Fig. 3 not shown), 96 fixed to the top of the sinker ring. In operation the needles are lowered to take and knit the ground yarn 34, and plating yarn 97 if provided, while the sinkers are withdrawn. The warp yarns 22 rotate with the needle cylinder and are guided between the needles. When the needles lower, the sinkers move radially inwards to push the weft yarn 43 over the back of the needles. The warps are also retained by the hook of the sinker. To commence a new fabric, the warp yarns are threaded-up through to the draw-off. The needles are lowered so that the heads are below the sinker throat, and the latches held open. The needles rise to take yarn while the sinkers are retracted, when the needles are lowered, the sinkers are projected to push the weft yarn over the needles and between the warp yarns and loops of the ground yarn. Knitting normally resumes at the next feeding station.
