Abstract

1384447 Salicylic acid ethers and xanthone-2- carboxylic acids SYNTEX CORP 12 July 1972 [12 Jan 1972] 32537/72 Heading C2C A (p-substituted-phenyl) salicylic acid ether, wherein the substituent is carboxy or an ester or amide thereof, is obtained by treating a (psubstituted-phenyl) salicylate with a strong base. Specified bases are alkali metal hydrides, hydroxides, alkoxides, carbonates and amides. The reaction is preferably conducted in polar solvents, and under conditions which discourage cleavage of the salicylate ester bond, e.g. under an inert atmosphere, and substantially anhydrous conditions. Examples are given which illustrate the process. A (p-substituted-phenyl) salicylate may be obtained by condensing p-hydroxybenzoic acid, or an ester or amide thereof with salicylic acid or the acid chloride thereof. Also the (p-substituted-phenyl salicylic acid ether may be cyclized to give the corresponding xanthone-2-carboxylic acid, or ester or amide thereof. The xanthone products are useful for inhibiting the effects of allergic reactions, also as smooth muscle relaxants or vasodilators. They may be administered in association with conventional pharmaceutical excipients.
