Abstract

1384370 Injection moulding container closures UNITED GLASS Ltd 11 April 1972 [11 Jan 1971] 1187/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] An injection-moulded one-piece closure has a lower skirt portion 4 of heat-shrinkable material. The closure, which has an internal thread 2, is fitted to the neck of a container having an external screw thread, and the skirt portion 4 is then heat-shrunk. The closure has a line of frangible bridges 5 so that tampering is easily detected. The closure is of plastics material and is formed in a mould, Fig. 4, that comprises a mould shell 8, a retractable central core 9, and inner and outer sleeves 10, 11 respectively which surround the core. The closure is moulded as shown in Fig. 3, the sleeve 11 is then retracted and air is blown on to the interior of the skirt so as to force the skirt into a flared configuration. The skirt is thereby stressed and on cooling the closure is ready to be applied to a container. In a further method of producing a heatshrinkable skirt thermoplastics material is introduced through gate 14 in the direction of arrow a and the material then flows in the direction of arrow b. The flow ensures that the material will undergo maximum shrinking in the direction along which the material was oriented during its flow into the mould.
