Abstract

1384225 Escalators WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 15 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39584/73 Heading B8A Escalator steps are removable at any position of the working run by releasing clamping means 82, 84, and lifting the other (riser) end of the step upwards. Each clamping means 82, 84, comprises a portion 86 (Figs. 3 and 4), which is fixed to the frame 50 of the step and engages the upper half of a rubber bushing 66 carried by a shaft 36. The latter carries wheels 38 running on rails 40. A movable part 88 of each clamping means 82, 84, has a laterally offset operating member 116. On replacing the step, one first engages wheels 58 on the riser end of the step with a second set of rails 72, and then lowers the other end of the step so that the fixed portions 86 engage their respective upper halves of the bushings 66). The member 116 of each clamping means 82, 84, is automatically cammed by engagement with the shaft 36, to cause the movable part 88 to be swung into locking position. The locking is effected by the operation by an Allen Key 108 of a screw 104. The key 108 can be inserted into its operative position through an aperture 110 in the tread 56 of the step. The step is removed by reversing the above procedure. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown) a spring locking member is employed.
