Abstract

1383717 Converter hoods; removing waste products in industrial processes CREUSOTLOIRE ENTREPRISES 27 June 1973 [3 Aug 1972] 30479/73 Headings F4B F4J and F4X In a gas collection device for a converter 2 comprising a hood 3, a skirt 4, a canopy 6 supported by a platform 1, and sealing devices 5 and 8 to ensure gas-tightness between the skirt 4 and the hood and canopy respectively, the pressure within the skirt and canopy is maintained at substantially atmospheric pressure to avoid the entry of air and escape of gas through the gap between the canopy 6 and the top of the converter 2. Sensors 7 measure the pressure within the skirt 4, and the passage of gas between the hood 3 and the upper portion of the converter is controlled by means of a shutter 9 which is mounted in a cutaway portion 61 in the canopy 6 and is movable vertically via cables 14, guide pulleys 15 and a winch mechanism (not shown). Gas-tightness between the shutter 9 and the skirt 4 is effected by means of a plate 13 which dips into a water chamber 12, and vertical labyrinth joints ensure gas-tightness at each side of the movable shutter 9 between it and the canopy 6. The canopy 6 may include a water-cooling system, e.g. of the water-jacket type.
