1383716 Detecting thickness variations J M ALPERIN 22 June 1973 29763/73 Heading G1M Continuous strip material, Fig. 1 moving along on a conveyer 46 passes beneath a thickness detector 41 or a cutter 48, any imperfect cut length being captured by a hinged door 57 operated by a signal transmitted from 41. In place of the cutter a dye marker may be utilized to indicate the detected points of thickness variation. The detector 41 comprises a vertically telescopic sprung leg 60, Fig. 2, to which is pivoted at 62 an L-shaped leg 61 integrally supporting an L-shaped arm 64 carrying at its upper end a cam 65 operating either micro-switch 101 or micro-switch 102 according to displacement of the arm 64 and the leg 61 which is held against the material by spring 85, any vertical displacement of roller 45 producing a lateral displacement of cam 65 to operate one of the switches. The detector 41 may be adjusted in several ways to detect any predetermined differential thickness or variation, and detect maximum and minimum thicknesses if a third micro-switch is fixed above 65. A solenoid 78 is actuated under normal conditions to swing an arm 77 and cause the legs to be locked against vertical movement in a sliding block holder 66, but pivoting movement of the leg 61 about the screw 62 due to thickness variation de-energizes the solenoid and allows the two legs to again move upwardly together and the height of the pivot screw 62 to re-adjust. Thus the combined operation of stationary leg 60 and movable leg 61 achieves the dual result of detecting thickness variations and adjusting to a new uniform thickness within the adjusted limits so that once a new thickness is detected to have existed throughout at least a predetermined length, the reference or datum thickness is adjusted so that thereafter no indication of thickness variation is given.
