Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable a high-precise measurement of a detect of a moving steel piece, by a method wherein head bases, being movably mounted on frames which move between a measurement position and an evacuation position, are pressed against a steel piece by means of elevating devices. CONSTITUTION:Head holders 52 and 51, provided with a transmitting, receiving head for electromagnetic ultrasonic wave, are movably mounted on frames 20a- 20c movable installed on a frame BF, and are moved vertically by means of elevating devices 50 and 60. In this constitution, in the case of defect-finding, the frames 20a-20c are moved from an evacuation position to a measurement position, and the holders 51 and 52, moved to a center of a steel piece 100, are pressed against the steel piece 100 through profiling rollers by means of elevating devices 50 and 60 to find a defect. This always keeps a constant relative distance between the measurement head and the steel piece 100, and permits the high-precise detection of a fault.
