Abstract

1383447 Solid state cell with lithium anode COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE 1 March 1972 [4 March 1971] 9639/72 Heading H1B A rechargeable cell comprises a number of thin solid layers, these layers comprising, in order, (i) a cathodic collector, e.g. of silver; (ii) a catholyte capable of supplying anions which can form a salt with lithium, e.g. silver iodide; (iii) a separator consisting of a lithium salt, e.g. lithium iodide, and a material having a solid structure, the separator being an ionic conductor, an electron insulator, and being impermeable to the catholyte, and (iv) a lithium anode. The separator is made by a method which ensures that the lithium salt is present at least partially in solvate form whereby the ionic conductivity of the separator is increased. The method of the making the separator comprises putting the lithium salt in solution in a solvent and in forming a thin solid layer with that solution and the solid structure material. The solvent may comprise at least one of the following:-water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, acetamide, N-methylacetamide, N-methylformamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, isopropylamine, propylene carbonate, formic aldehyde. In a specific example of performing the method, a soluble organic binder is added to the solution of the lithium salt in the solvent. When the solvent is water, the binder is selected from the group polyvinylic alcohol and carboxymethylcellulose. When the solvent is methanol or ethanol the binder is selected from vinyl polyacetate, polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinylic ethers, resols or formal-phenol prepolymeric resins and monomeric methacrylates. When the solvent is acetone the binder is selected from polymethacrylates, polystyrene, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate and methacrylates. This solution is applied to a thin solid porous inert layer, constituting the solid structure material, so as to impregnate it. Heat is applied to evaporate the solvent. In other methods described, the binder constitutes the solid structure material.
