Abstract

1382831 Valves P & R ELECTRICAL (LONDON) Ltd 28 Jan 1972 [24 Feb 1971] 5353/71 Heading F2V [Also in Division F4] A domestic hot water system in which two appliances are adapted to be supplied with hot water from a single, continuous-flow heater, comprises: two mixing valves 24, 26, Fig. 4, each connected to one of the appliances and to the mains; and a selector valve 23 connected to the heater 31. Each mixing valve has hot and cold knobs 59, 60. To use an appliance 35, selector valve 23 is adjusted to bring ducts 3, 17 into communication with ducts 11, 9 respectively. The hot handle 60 of mixing valve 24 is then turned and cold water passes from the mains through ducts 9, 17 and into the heater 31. The resulting hot water flows through ducts 3, 11 and mixing valve 24 to appliance 35. By turning the cold knob 59 the hot water is diluted with cold water. If cold water alone is required at the appliance, only knob 59 is rotated. To use an appliance connected to a pipe 47, selector valve 23 is first adjusted to bring ports 3, 17 into communication with ports 34, 4 respectively. Then, on turning the hot knob of mixing valve 26, cold water flows from the mains through ducts 4, 17 and into the heater. The resulting hot water flows back to mixing valve 26 and thence to the appliance via ducts 3, 34. The hot water can be diluted &c. with cold water as before. The flow through the six ducts in selector valve 23 is controlled by a shaft 12, Fig. 3, formed with bores 21, 22, 19, 20. The flow through the mixing valves 24, 26 is controlled by valve elements 57, 58, Fig. 5. Lifting element 58 from its seat permits water from the mains to flow through inlet 50 and port 74 to the heater. The returning hot water re-enters through port 63 and passes along duct 65 to the appliance. Lifting element 57 dilutes the hot water with cold water or replaces it entirely if element 58 is seated. Depending upon the position of selector valve 23, one or other of the ducts 65 in the mixing valves 24, 26 permanently vent the heater to atmosphere. Selector valve 23 and mixing valve 26 may be separate or formed as a single unit.
