1382746 Modified fillers for polyolefins MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 15 May 1973 [20 June 1972] 23183/73 Heading C3P Compositions comprise a polyolefin resin and a modified filler prepared by crushing particles of an inorganic filler in the presence of a homopolymer or copolymer of a "vinyl" monomer having one or more polar groups so as to form new surfaces to which the polymer can bond. The filler may be titanium, aluminium or ferric oxide; aluminium hydroxide; calcium carbonate, sulphate, sulphite or silicate; barium sulphate; magnesium silicate; talc, mica, sellaite, kaolin, asbestos or zeolite; or silica. The polymer may be derived from acrylic and methacrylic acids, acrylates and methacrylates, styrene, acrylamide, vinyl chloride and mixtures thereof with α-olefins. The polymer may be dissolved in a solvent. The modified fillers may be incorporated in polymers of ethylene, propylene and butene-1, and copolymers thereof with vinyl acetate, acrylates, styrene and vinyl chloride; optionally in admixture with olefin copolymer and butadiene/ styrene copolymer rubbers. Coloured products may be obtained when the modifying polymer contains heavy metal acrylate or methacrylate units. The compositions may be used for making paper, board and wood substitutes and packing materials. In examples polypropylene, polyethylene and ethylene/propylene block copolymers are compounded with modified fillers prepared by crushing calcium carbonate in the presence of (1) polylauryl methacrylate and (4) lauryl methacrylate/acrylic acid and lauryl methacrylate/cyclohexyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymers; silica in the presence of (2) ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer; kaolin in the presence of (3) sodium acrylate polymer and (5) copolymers of lauryl and cyclohexylmethacrylates with hydroxyethyl, glycidyl or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; and talc in the presence of (6) dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate with lauryl or butyl methacrylate.
