1,217,231. Polymer compositions. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 8 Jan., 1968 [13 Jan., 1967 (2)1, No. 1120/68. Headings C3G and C3P. Modified olefin polymer compositions are prepared by treating an olefin polymer with a radical generating initiator and reacting the product with a vinyl or vinylidene compound in the molten state and with agitation of the reaction mixture whereby part of the monomer is graft or block polymerized with the olefin polymer and part is polymerized per se, the total monomer polymerized constituting 3 to 30 weight per cent based on the olefin polymer and the proportion of monomer graft or block polymerized with the olefin polymer being 10 to 65 weight per cent of the monomer polymerized. Specified olefin polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, poly - 3 - methylbutene - 1, poly - 4 - methylpentene - 1, polystyrene and ethylene/propylene, ethylene/butene, ethylene / vinyl acetate, ethylene / ethyl acrylate and propylene / 4 - methylpentene - 1 copolymers. Specified monomers are styrene, methylstyrenes, acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters, nitriles, amides and salts, vinyl and allyl esters, and vinyl polycyclic and heterocyclic compounds. The initiator may be an organic peroxide, azide or azo compound; and the reaction may be effected in a kneader, Banbury mixer or screw extruder, preferably in the absence of oxygen. Many suitable monomers and initiators are listed and examples describe the simultaneous polymerization and grafting of lauryl methacrylate with (1, 4 and 10 to 12) polypropylene and (3) ethylene/propylene block copolymer, n-butyl methacrylate with (2 and 5 to 9) polypropylene and acrylic acid with (13 and 14) polypropylene, using dicumyl peroxide, cumyl hydroperoxide or α,α<SP>1</SP> - bis(t - butyl peroxy) - p - diisopropyl benzene as initiator.
