Abstract

1382568 Sequestrants and anti-corrosion agents MONSANTO CO 16 May 1973 [17 May 1972 (3)] 23252/73 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions C2 C7 and Dl] Precipitation of scale and corrosion of metals in an aqueous system is inhibited by incorporating in the system a compound of formula where R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, metal ions, ammonium ions or substituted ammonium ions, R 3 and R 4 are C 2-5 alkylene, n is 0 to 10 and Z is a C 2-15 hydrocarbon group. The compounds of Formula I may be used together with a water-soluble polycarboxylic acid or polycarboxylate, a water-soluble zinc salt, a water-soluble compound of hexavalent chromium, an acetodiphosphonic acid or salt thereof, lignin, lignosulphonate, starch, sodium mannuronate, agar-agar, a polyelectrolyte, aminotri-(methylphosphonic acid), polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, aminomethylphosphonic acid, a leucocyanidin-catechin polymer, an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide polymer, a water-soluble inorganic silicate, 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid or, where the. system is in contact with steel, copper or a copper-containing metal, with a 1,2,3-triazole or a thiol of a thiazole, oxazole or imidazole. Sequestration of calcium, iron, copper, nickel and chromium is exemplified.
