Abstract

1382567 Floating breakwaters W L MOORE 14 May 1973 [6 June 1972] 22842/73 Heading E1H A floating structure, e.g. a mobile breakwater or drilling platform, Fig. 10 (not shown), has rectangular wave reflecting surfaces Fl, F2 disposed alternately in vertical planes spaced apart in the direction of the wave movement by approximately one half the wave length of the waves expected to impinge on the structure, the sum of the surface areas of the surfaces in the planes being equal, such that the net movement about the centre of the structure is approximately zero. The spacing between the planes may be adjustable. The breakwater shown has side plates O and floats M. In Fig. 4 (not shown), plates O are omitted and plates F1, F2 are supported by an open framework. In Fig. 5 (not shown), plates F1, F2 have flanged edges projecting towards the waves. In Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), two barges have faces constituting one plane of reflecting surfaces and are separated by an offset plate, the edges of the barges and plate having downwardly extending skirts formed with flanges. In Fig. 8 (not shown), the refiecting surfaces are disposed stepwise in three planes. In Fig. 9 (not shown), examples are given of different surface shapes and angles. In Fig. 11 (not shown), a barge arrangement provides the breakwater configuration to reduce drag.
