Abstract

1382464 Reverse osmosis module AQUACHEM Inc 20 April 1972 18501/72 Heading B1X [Also in Division Fl] A membrane module for use in reverse osmosis comprises elongated tubular casing 100 capable of withstanding reverse osmosis operating pressures, a plurality of elongated tubular membrane cells 160 within the casing each comprising a semi-permeable membrane supported by a porous tube, the interface between each membrane and its support tube forming a solvent directing means for directing permeate to at least one end of the cell, the membrane cells being arranged in interfitting and abutting relationship, each pair of adjacent cells having outer surfaces parallel to each other, and the casing supporting those cell surfaces not in abutting relationship with adjacent cells, an inlet 114 directing a liquid mixture to the interior of each cell and a solvent collecting manifold 194, 192 in communication with the permeate outlet ends of the cells. Each cell may comprise an imperforate plastics support tube having longitudinal grooves on its inner surface, a porous material tube within the support tube and a tubular semi-permeable membrane film cast within the porous tube, the permeated solvent then flowing along the grooves in the support tube to the outlet manifold. Alternatively each cell may comprise a porous paper or plastics support tube having a semi-permeable membrane cast within it (Fig. 6, not shown). There is a reference to use of triangular or quadrilateral cross-section cells. In the embodiment shown, shell 100 also encloses motor 130 driving the pistons of three piston cylinder units which operate to pressurize the incoming liquid for transmission through pipe 140 to the input end space 144 of the membrane cell module, the motor also driving impeller 148 in end space 144. Shell 100 also includes resilient walled doughnutshaped tube 180 (Fig. 5b as shown) which can be charged through pipe 184 with pressurized fluid and acts to minimize the effect of pressure pulses within shell 100.
