Abstract

1382425 Motor wheels NEWAGE ENGS Ltd 10 May 1972 [11 May 1971 12 May 1971 18 Oct 1971] 14320/71 14595/71 and 48261/71 Heading B7H A motor wheel, e.g. for an industrial lift truck, includes a wheel hub 1, 3 which surrounds and is journalled to the fixed housing 6 of an electric motor 7, the drive shaft 9 of the motor 7 being coupled to wheel hub 1, 3 through an epicyclic reduction gear mechanism 14, and a friction brake mechanism which is located at the same side as, and externally of, the gear mechanism 14, the brake consisting of a pair of rotary brake members which are respectively secured to the drive shaft 9 and to the wheel hub 3. As described the motor housing 6 is carried by a bracket 8 and the gear mechanism 14 is of the epicyclic gyratory type. In a first embodiment (Fig. 1) the outer brake member consists of a frusto-conical brake drum 32 which has a lining 35 and which is fixed to the wheel hub 3 by bolts 34. The inner brake member 30 is keyed to the shaft 9 by a splined hub and can be moved axially to apply the brake by means of a thrust rod 37, lever 47 and cable 50. The brake is held in the "off" position by a coil spring 51 or by a stack of conical spring washers (not shown). Alternatively the brake is held on by a spring and is released by the cable 50. The brake member 30 may be adjustably mounted on the thrust rod 37 by a threaded connection (not shown), and may be provided with apertures 38 and fins 39 which act as centrifugal fan blades to draw in a flow of cooling air through apertures 38 and discharge it through slots 40 to cool the oil in the gear compartment 42 of the hub 3. In a second embodiment (Fig. 6) the brake is hydraulically operated. The brake cylinder 71 is fixed to a bracket 79 and is journalled in an aperture 73 in the outer brake member 32A. The inner brake member 30A is held in its "off" position by a spring 70 and can be moved axially to apply the brake by piston 82 acting through thrust rod 84, the reaction being applied to the outer brake member 32A through flange 74 on cylinder 71.
