Abstract

1382022 Percussive tools ATLAS COPCO AB 20 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 29187/73 Heading B4C A hammer piston 3 of a rock drill is driven towards a tool 5 by a gas cushion in the working chamber 4 of a driving piston 2 and gas is transferred from the chamber to a channel in the tool through a passage device 14 during normal operation, the hammer piston having an extreme position beyond the normal working stroke in which the tool is at rest and the driving piston can still operate so that gas can still be transferred from the working chamber to the channel in the tool. As shown in Fig. 2 the hammer piston is in the impact position being driven to this position by a gas cushion created by a compressor piston driven by an I.C. engine. The return of the hammer piston after impact is ensured by suction in the working chamber 4 by the upward movement of the piston 2. On this return, the hammer piston strikes an impact ring 7 slidable within a chamber 22. When the piston 2 is driven downwards it closes air intake 21 and the hammer piston 3 moves down to open a connection between the working chamber 4 and a non-return valve 16 of the passage device for transferring air via a pipe 14 and passageways to a flushing channel (15) Fig. 1 (not shown) in the tool 5 for flushing purposes. When the rock drill is lifted by means of handles 25, the tool drops to the position shown in Fig. 4 and the hammer piston 3 drops on to a resilient stop 13 to force air from a damping chamber 9 into the flushing channel of the tool. In this lifted position, the piston 2 is unable to suck the hammer piston 3 back.
