Abstract
1381726 Breaking; consolidating scrap BRITISH STEEL CORP 28 July 1972 [29 July 1971] 35692/71 Headings B3H and B3E [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] A crusher 20, Fig. 7, used to fragment bundles of scrap metal 24 which have been rendered brittle by a low temperature heat treatment, consists of platens 92, 94, the upper platen 92 only being movable, having projections 96, the projections on one platen being offset with respect to the projections on the other platen. These projections impart highly localized bending moments and shear forces to the scrap and promotes fracture along the plains indicated by chain-dot lines 98. The scrap metal is first consolidated in a press, Fig. 6, comprising platens 86, 88 actuated each by a pair of hydraulic rams 90.
