Abstract

1379994 Welding by pressure; strip joining apparatus BRITISH FEDERAL WELDER & MACHINE CO Ltd 19 June 1973 [7 April 1972] 16109/72 Headings B3R and B3A A method of welding together the ends of metal strips 20, 23 comprises overlapping the ends of the strips (Fig. 4) heating the overlapped ends while passing a pair of planishing rolls 10 across the strips to deform the ends and provide a pair of welding surfaces 30 and subsequently welding the ends together at the welding surfaces (Fig. 7). As a preliminary step the ends of the strips are sheared. Electric current is supplied through the planishing rolls 10 to heat the overlapping ends and after treatment with the planishing rolls the strip 23 is withdrawn slightly to bring the two strips into alignment at the welding surfaces. Welding rolls 11 are then traversed across the strip ends, welding current being supplied via the rolls 11. The planishing rolls may follow up the weld rolls to improve the surface finish in the weld area. Reference is made to the welding of stainless and special alloy steels as well as mild steel.
