1332452 Welding by pressure BRITISH FEDERAL WELDER & MACHINE CO Ltd 30 Nov 1970 [30 Aug 1969] 43265/69 Heading B3R A method of welding two ends of metal strips includes the steps of overlapping the strip ends applying pressure to the strip ends to deform them and produce mating welding surfaces thereon, said overlapping and pressure applying steps leaving a discontinuity betweeen each pair of adjacent surfaces of the strip ends, further deforming the strips in the area of the ends out of the planes of the strips to reduce said discontinuities and welding the strips across the surfaces. A head carries three pairs of rolls in tandem, the first pair 10, Fig. 8 being cylindrical rolls, the second pair 11 being concave and convex respectively with the nip raised above that of pair 10 and a third pair 12 of cylindrical electrode rollers. The end of one strip and the beginning of the next are held in clamps 22, 23, Fig. 6 and overlapped, and the head is advanced across the ends to produce diagonal mating surfaces by pair 10, concave and convex surfaces by the pair 11 and welded surfaces by the pair 12, the welded strips appearing as shown in Fig. 6.
