Abstract

1379633 Seaming non-metallic sheet material JELTEK Ltd 8 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5366/72 Heading B5K Pieces of coated fabric 10, 12 are joined by sewing a heat fusible tape 14 in a seam and fusing the tape by high frequency electric welding or ultrasonic welding. Preferably the fabric is of nylon or polyethylene terephthalate and is treated with a silicone compound for waterproofing. The coating 10c, 12c is polyurethane or acrylic resin. The tape may be made wholly or predominantly of gutta percha or polyvinyl chloride. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the tape 14 is disposed initially so that about half its width extends between confronting marginal portions 10m, 12m of the fabrics 10, 12 and the remainder overlies the coating 12c of the portion 12m, Fig. 1 (not shown). The assembly is sewn along a first line 16 of stitching to leave tape portions 14<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>11</SP> protruding. The fabric 12 and the portion 14<SP>11</SP> are turned about the line 16 so as to overlie edge portions 10b, 12b of the fabrics 10, 12. The assembly is sewn along a second line 18 and is run between electrodes of a high frequency welding machine to fuse the tape 14 which runs into the needle holes. The portion 14<SP>1</SP> is torn off and discarded. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the portion 10b extends between the double layer 1411 and the edge 10e of the fabric stops short of the stitching line 16. The portions 10m, 12m are interlapped and the tape 14 is interposed therebetween in zig-zag fashion. A waterproof jacket, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be formed. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, a fusible p.v.c. tape 14 is disposed to embrace the superposed edges of the fabrics 10, 12 and to overlie the coatings 10c, 12c, thereof. The assembly is sewn along a first line 20 to leave tape portions 14<SP>1</SP>, 1411. The fabric 12 is turned through 180 degrees about a line spaced from the line 20 and is stitched along a line 22. The free part of the tape portion 14<SP>1</SP> is doubled over about the line 22 and the assembly is run between electrodes of a high frequency welding machine to fuse the tape 14.
