PODNIK 10 Jan 1972 [19 Jan 1971] 1119/72 Heading AID A potato or other seed planting machine consists of a vertical disc 2 rotatably mounted on a driven shaft 1 and provided with recesses 3 around its periphery which are covered by flaps 4 of corresponding shape pivotably mounted on hinges 5. Holding members 6 are mounted near each recess 3 on radial shafts 7 rotatably fitted on disc 2 and are loaded by springs 8. Each shaft 7 carries at its end an abutment 9 bearing on stationary cam 10. Each flap 4 has a locking stop 11 which bears on a stationary member 12 for part of the rotation of disc 2. At one side of disc 2, extending radially outwardly beyond, and adjacent recesses 3 are guiding blades 13. A stationary arcuate chute 14 runs along part of the path of the tips of blades 13 which travel just inside the chute, the lower end of which extends between the wings of a furrow opener 15. Fitted to the ends of blades 13 are expeller blades 16. If the machine is to have a high travelling speed there may be two discs 2 supplying seeds alternately to each row (Fig. 13). In operation picking disc 2 rotates in direction P through the space of container 21 housing the seeds to be planted. Holding members 6 are opened in this region by abutments 9 striking cam 10, and after the abutment leaves the cam, spring 8 clamps the seed between member 6 and the closed flap 4 which lies in the plane of the disc while stop 11 engages member 12. When it ceases to do this flap 4 is opened by the pressure of spring- loaded member 6 and the seed, guided by seedfeeder 17 with its leading edge 18, is shifted to the other side of disc 2 through recess 3 and onto guiding blade 13 which revolves with disc 2. Under gravity and centrifugal force the seed moves to the outer end of blade 13, being retarded somewhat with respect to free fall with the same initial velocity, and is then driven along chute 14 by expeller blade 16 until it drops into the furrow which is kept open by the wings of furrow opener 15.
