Abstract

1379621 Tumbling O PLETSCHER and T PLETSCHER [trading as PLETSCHER GEBR] 22 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 8180/72 Heading B3D A method of treating the surfaces of workpieces 19 by means of a mass of smooth-surface or abrasive particles 18 comprises placing the particles into a state of free fall, and in the presence of a friction-reducing medium causing the particles to impact upon and then slide along the surface of the workpiece. In apparatus for carrying out the method, the particles and workpieces are fed into one end of a drum 1 which is rotatable about an axis slightly inclined to the horizontal in support rollers, the inclination causing the workpieces to move along the drum and out the other end. The ends of the drum are connected by sliding face seals 11, Fig. 4, to angled or flexed inlet and outlet conduits, respectively. The inner surface of the drum is lined with rubber, plastic, wood or like material 3 formed with ribs 5 and grooves 4. Ribs 15 at the end of the drum form a trough 16 in the drum for retaining the friction-reducing medium, such as a liquid lubricant. When the drum is rotated, the particles, which may be in the form of spheres, pellets, stones, granules or the like, are carried by the grooves and the centrifugal force towards the top of the drum and drop on to the workpieces which roll and tumble in the lower part of the drum. After impinging on the workpieces, the particles because of the presence of the medium, which is only sufficient to coat the particles and workpieces, maintain contact with and slide along the surface of the workpieces to effect a finishing treatment. The particles may be re-cycled through the drum by the use of a pump, and any losses of the medium made good by a dosing pump. The medium may contain a cleaning agent and silicone. In another embodiment, the drum is in the form of a prismatic, for example, three-sided, shell.
