Abstract

1379065 Respiratory appliances M J O'CONNOR 28 July 1972 [28 July 1971] 35469/72 Headings A5K and A5T A breathing device comprises a closed container 2 having a volume of at least 500 cc, a mouthpiece 8 through which air can be inhaled from the container and exhaled into the container, and an end cap 10 closing one end of the container 2 and having openings 12, 14, 14', and (14"), see Fig. 4 (not shown), the openings 14, 14' and (14") being closed by a flap valve 16 so that air can leave the container 10 through the opening 12, but not through the openings 14, 14' and 14". The container 2 can be made from cardboard or rigid plastics. The mouthpiece 8 may consist of a tube of flexible polyethylene fitted into an opening 6 of -a metal end cap 4 of the container. The flap 16 may be made from polyethylene and may be attached to the end cap 10 by a piece of tape 18. The volume of the container may be between 500cc and 3500cc. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the opening (13), corresponding to the opening 12, is fitted with a further flap (19) made from, for example, flexible steel, which prevents exhaled air from leaving the container until, for example, there is a pressure of 15cm. of water above atmospheric in the container. The appliance prevents collapse of the lung (otelactosis) by increasing the force resisting exhalation thereby increasing the pressure in the lungs, and by increasing the percentage of CO 2 in the inhaled air so causing the alveoli of the patient's lungs to dilate.
