Abstract

1379002 Purification of laurolactam POLYMER CORP 24 Jan 1973 [24 Jan 1972] 3689/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] A process for purifying laurolactam comprises crystallizing the lactam from an organic solvent having the general formula wherein X is a (C 1 -C 18 ) alkyl group, an alkoxyalkyl group having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, or an alkoxyalkylene group having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and from 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyiene group, or wherein X together with Y, forms a heterocyclic ring having 5 or 6 ring carbon atoms, and Y has either the same meaning as X, or, if X is alkyl, then Y may represent an aryl group with 1 or 2 benzene nuclei or a hydroxyalkyl group. The process is preferably carried out under an inert gas atmosphere. Suitable specified solvents include 1,2-dimethoxyethane, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethyleneglycol diethyl ether, diethyleneglycol dibutyl ether, ethyleneglycol monobenzylether, triethyleneglycol dimethylether, tetramethyleneglycol dimethylether, tetrahydrofuran, anisole, dibutyl ether, methoxyethyl butyrate, venatrol, homoveratrol and dioxane.
