Abstract

1378733 Thermionic cathode constructions TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO Ltd 27 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 20222/73 Heading H1D An indirectly heated cathode comprises a hollow casing 1 containing a mixture 3, 4 of a metal and an insulating and heat resistive material, an emissive substrate 2 mounted at one end of the casing and a metal foil heater 5 embedded in the mixture and spaced from the substrate. A concave porous disc 2 is brazed to a Mo cylinder and covered with a layer 4 of the mixture. A flat spiral W foil heater 5 is added and covered with a mixture of Al 2 O 3 and Mo powders. This is compressed with a die 6 and sintered. The inner surface of substrate 2 and the heater may both be concave. The mixture may comprise Y 2 O 3 , ZrO, HfO 2 , BeO 2 , MgO or a rare earth oxide and W, Ni, Re, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Cr or elements of the Pt group. The cylinder may be coated with Ru-Mo alloy. The heater may comprise one spiral or two interleaved spirals joined at their centres. It is etched from sheet then shaped under pressure at 1700‹ C. It may be coated with an insulating oxide film. A thin heater permits the use of a shorter casing thereby reducing heat losses and shortening starting time. The cathode is used in klystrons and travelling wave tubes.
