Abstract

1376998 Treating waste liquors SNAM PROGETTI SpA 21 April 1972 [23 April 1971 7 May 1971] 18740/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division C7] A process for purifying aqueous waste liquor containing ions comprising metal in a first valency state which metal is capable of reduction to a second and lower valency state comprises contacting the liquor at an acid pH with an electrode couple comprising anode material which is electropositive with respect to hydrogen and a cathode material which is less electropositive than the anode material or electronegative with respect to hydrogen, the materials being in contact in the liquor or being electrically connected inside or outside the liquor. The liquor may be passed through a bed of contacting grains or small bodies of the electrode materials or treated in a vessel containing electrodes (e.g. plates, bars or rods) separated by a porous membrane. The cathode may be C, Hg, Cu amalgam or C impregnated with Hg; the anode, Fe, Zn, Ni, Sn, Pb or Cr. The purifying process may comprise a precipitating or flocculating step in which alkali is used. Ethylenediaminetetracetic acid may be used in the process. In the treatment of mercury salt liquors, the liquor after treatment with the electrode couple may be passed through a bed of Cu turnings. The metal may be removed from the liquor in its elementary state or in the form of an insoluble product. The process may be used to treat chromate liquors from steel anodizing and chromium plating processes, mercuric chloride and sulphate liquors obtained in chemical making processes and copper sulphate liquors.
