Abstract

1350953 Electrolytic production of colloids; purification of liquids NORTON CO 5 May 1971 13387/71 Addition to 1257541 Heading C1C [Also in Division C7] A liquid is electrochemically treated (other than a treatment involving metal deposition on the cathode) whilst subjecting anode or cathode to continuous activation as described in the parent Specification. The process may be used in treatment of industrial effluent, e.g. cyanide-containing waste or sewage; or in the synthesis and dispersion of colloidal, active material in the electrolyte; e.g. a corrodible metallic anode such as Al, Mg, Fe or Cu may be used to form a colloidal hydroxide for use as a medicinal agent. In water purification aluminium electrodes may be used to produce flocculent aluminium hydroxide which coagulates impurities in the water. Compounds such as CaF 2 may be added to the electrolyte, which upon electrolysis form decomposition products which react with organic and inorganic substances in the liquid.
