Abstract

1376451 Welding by pressure B TROJANI 8 Nov 1971 51786/71 Heading B3R [Also in Division F4] In making a heat exchange element comprising metal fins having an elongated lateral crosssection welded to a pipe so that the fins are arranged in longitudinal and circumferential rows with successive fins of each row having their respective longer axes of symmetry disposed alternately in one and the other of two positions at right angles, two electrodes disposed parallel on the same side of the tube or in diametrically opposed position, one at each side of the tube are used to weld the fins, each electrode having a cavity with an elongated or cross-like lateral cross-section. The fins are placed in the cavities so that their longer axes of symmetry are at right angles and current is passed between the tube and each electrode. The electrodes with elongated cavities are rotated through 90 degrees between welding operations but those with cross-shaped cavities are not. The studs may be oval or rectangular, 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, in section with tapered ends. The cross-like electrode cavity receives firstly a first stud and then, after removal from the first stud, a second stud having its longer axis of symmetry at right angles to that of the first, without turning the electrode. In a machine for welding studs to a pipe with electrodes having cross-shaped cavities, the pipe 1, Fig. 11, is rotated stepwise by a pneumatic cylinder 7 operating a gear 12 attached to the pipe support spindle, a ratchet 13 preventing return during steps. Two opposed electrodes 3, 3<SP>1</SP> carried on pneumatic rams 6, 6<SP>1</SP> weld studs to opposite sides of the pipe.
