Abstract

1376160 Electro-plating NORTON CO 29 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 60511/71 Heading C7B In an electro-plating process the plating bath comprises a mixture of fluid electrolyte and small, hard, activating particles; a vibratory movement of the mixture is maintained throughout the electroplating process, e.g. by vibration of the workpiece or the electrolyte container; and the number of particles present in the bath is such that during vibration the number of particles present per unit volume does not differ by more than 5% from the number present in the absence of vibration. The particles may be glass, sand, ceramics, bauxite or other abrasive material. The metal to be deposited may be nickel, zinc or copper; and the bath may include normal brightening additives, - examples given including thioureas, aniline dyes, coloidal materials, amines, H 2 O 2 , non-depositing metals, carbonyls, phenyls, and aromatic thio compounds and polysulphonic acids. As shown container 12 is mounted on and driven by drive shafts 11. Electrolyte may be cycled for make-up, filtering, etc, using outlet O from sump 19 which is protected from the particles by mesh screen S, and inlet I.
