Abstract
1347184 Electro-deposition of composite coatings BRISTOL AEROJET Ltd 7 July 1972 31897/72 Addition to 1329081 Heading C7B In electro-depositing (e.g. electro-forming) a composite coating consisting of an electrolytically deposited metal matrix with particulate additions, a solution containing insoluble particles is agitated (as claimed in Specification 1329081) by up and down movement of a generally horizontal perforated agitator-and, in addition, gas is admitted to the solution to produce a generally upward flow of gas in the region in which deposition takes place. As shown in Fig. 2 (which is a top partly sectional view of suitable apparatus) a perforated plate agitator 3, strengthened by bars 31, 32, is moved up and down within a rectangular tank 1 containing a slurry of plating solution and particles. Fixed to the agitator are perforated stainless steel pipes 33 connected to one another by a pipe 35. Air is supplied to the pipe 35 by a flexible pipe (not shown) leading to a compressed air supply outside the tank. The mechanism for moving the perforated plate agitator and examples of particles, metal matrices and substrates which may be used are as described in Specification 1329081.
