Abstract

1374465 Electrostatic coating apparatus W A SMITH 6 Dec 1972 [6 Oct 1971 2 Aug 1972] 46370/71 and 36087/72 Heading B2L An electrostatic coating apparatus for applying particulate. material to surfaces comprises a container 14 and a main discharge opening 31 beneath it with an electrode 18 connected to an electrostatic generator 22 and having also a metering device 35 in the base of the container which meters the powder or particulate material. The metering device comprises a four armed member driven from a motor 32 each arm having a flexible rubber member depending therefrom which pushes the powder through the grid at a constant rate. A covering plate 24 is provided to stop flow through the main discharge opening and when this is in position a door 46 is opened so that powder is diverted to an injector 50 to be fed into a hand coating appliance as at 65. The injector comprises an air inlet 59 which draws powdered material through the passage 44 and feeds it to an outlet tube 60 which is attached to the hand coating applicator. The hand applicator carries controls 97, 99 for the motor 32, generator 22 and compressor 159. An annular ring 66 on the pipe 65 is connected to the electrostatic generator and in use this contacts a point 78 connected to a chargeable grid electrode 84 in the outlet of the hand applicator 75 as the ring 66 is located inside the tube 74. The powder arriving through the tube 74 is stirred by bristles 86 driven rotationally by means of an air motor 90. A different type of hand applicator (not shown) may be used to fill in corners and the like a long slot like member being provided.
